“SMOKE AND GAS”
FROM THE
MULVANE MARAUDERS
JULY 2017

~Meeting was held Thursday, 7/20/17 and called to order at 6:30PM by Treasurer Steve Nichols (in absence of President Kevin Cardwell & Vice President Max Ayers) at the Mulvane American Legion.  Thanks to the ladies of the Legion for another fun dinner - and great fellowship prior to the meeting.
~50 officers, members & guests attended.  New member Ed Johnson was introduced to the club - he has a 1931 Ford and former member Scotty Addison has rejoined the club with his 1951 Merc.  Welcome guys - we are glad to have you and look forward to getting to know you.
~No additions or corrections from the May-June minutes.
~A motion was made by Jean Horstman and seconded by Bob Barr to pay for the flag mailbox previously discussed at a past meeting.  Motion passed.  This mailbox will be installed in front of the American Legion for flag disposal and then proper flag retirement.    A motion was also made to donate $500 to the American Legion for the continuous use of their building.  Motion made by Robin Gunter to donate these funds.  Seconded by Richard Gunter, motion passed.  The Mailbox (which was on site for all to see) was officially presented to Steve Coberly - Commander of the Post - along with the $500 check.   We have a great relationship with American Legion Post #136 & look forward to many more years partnering with them.
~We were pleased to have Cameron Heersche - the young lady that sang the National Anthem at Showdown - with us and presented her with a thank you trophy and gift card.
~We also presented trophies and gift cards to Levi, Amanda and Sonya from the Kansas Star Casino for their wonderful support with the car show.  Levi accepted these gifts along with a trohpy for the Kansas Star and will see to it they get to the others.
~Steve presented a Thank You trophy to members Larry and Vicky Taylor for their gifts to Showdown.  We appreciate their generosity and willingness to step up and help us with our major prize give aways.
~Steve Nichols gave the treasurer's report including bills paid, deposits (including dues) and expenses related to the recent Showdown in the Valley Car Show.  After all expenses - we are able to help our designated charities with more than we donated to them last year.  If you want to know details about the financials of the club and/or car show - please attend the August meeting or contact an officer for details.  This year's raffle items proved to be a HUGE success and the committee will look into expanding those prizes for next year.  The revenue received from the clocks and signs increased our income significantly.
~Steve reminded members that DUES are currently due - still the same amount - $25.  Please pay them at the August meeting or mail them to Steve Nichols, Treasurer, P.O. Box 151, Mulvane KS 67110.   We would like to get these paid and done for the year. If for some reason you have decided not to renew your dues, please let us know that as well.  It is our desire that all of our members renew and enjoy the membership with fellow car enthisiasts as we continue to support and help our communities.  If you have any questions concerning membership and/or dues please contact an officer and we will be glad to visit with you.
~Because of the discussion of amounts to be determined by the club for our charities, Cheryl excused herself from the meeting. Steve discussed amounts to be donated and when those checks will be presented to the Kansas Honor Flight, Mulvane Childrens Fund and Toys for Tots.
~We still have some 2017 Showdown shirts - XL ONLY - for $5 each.  We will have them at the August meeting and would like to sell them ASAP.  We also have Marauders club t-shirts for $10 each.
~$1000 has been approved for the Club dinner.  After a vote on BBQ, Mexican or Italian meals - BBQ won with 24 votes.  We will decide on a date in the near future and probably be on a Sunday at 1PM.  Diane and the ladies of the post will prepare the meal and members will provide the "Dessert Potluck" like our last meals.   That is fun and offers up a lot of wonderful and varied desserts.
~The Show Committee had a wrap up meeting at the American Legion on Monday, 6/26/17.  Details of the show were discussed along with things that we might perhaps look at for next year.   Also discussed with Sonya Jackson - Kansas State Casino - about dates for the show next year.   We might have some options for dates.
~Chris Middendorf reminded Marauders about the Mulvane Old Settlers Rod Run that will be held Saturday, August 19, 2017.  Pre-registration is $12 and day of $15.  There will be participants vote again this year and Chris encouraged all Marauders to attend this great and longstanding show.    If you have questions regarding the show, please contact Chris Middendorf.
~Lots of things are going on so be sure and check the website club events section - we try to post shows we constantly hear about.  If you need an event posted, please contact Cheryl or Steve.
~It was suggested that we think about putting together a "cruise" over to the Solid Rock Cafe in Rock KS.  If you have ideas on this or would like to be the "captain" of this event, please let us know.  We know members have lots of 'fun' ideas for activities - this is a great way to get involved - adopt an event,  get it planned and let us know!   That is what we are about - having fun with our rides and great fellowship!  LET US KNOW IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO PLAN AN OUTING FOR THE CLUB!!!
~Per an announcement from Janet Barr - there is a Car Show on Saturday, 8/5/17 in Dwight KS.   If you are interested in going to this show, please contact Janet or Bob.
~The Marauders received a thank you note from Kathy Jenkinson and family for the flowers, cards, love and support during their time of sorrow at the loss of longtime member Art Jenkinson.  Continue to keep the family in your prayers as they adjust to life without their loved one.

NEW BUSINESS
The Car Show Committee met on June 26 to discuss the results of the 2017 Show and to discuss the dates and ideas for the 2018 Showdown in the Valley. They also discussed a two day show but the vendors did not seem to be in favor of this so the two day show was rejected. This year the inside was not full and only a handful on the outside. There were other shows going on the same day as Showdown this year along with the proverbial Kansas heat.   But we had a great show and everyone enjoyed it and of course we raised funds for our charities.
There was discussion with Sonya and the Casino about a one or two day show for 2018.  We are going to stay with a one day show but have the option of moving the date.  The committee came up with,  along with the approval of the Casino of three dates - March 24 (1st Choice of the Casino), March 31 and June 16 - the same Father's Day weekend as in years past.
The committee discussed and hammered this out for hours with many different options including a swap meet along with the show and of course the trade off of changing the date from hot weather to cooler weather  - June vs March!!!  The committee also considered the dates of other major longstanding car shows so that we would go up against the least amount of competition.
~After considerable discussion of the options with the club, it was decided by a majority vote to change the date - Steve will check with the Casino once again to determine if it will be March 24 or 31.  We still stand to compete with things like Spring Break and the NCAA Basketball Tournament and Final Four games but the club decided to give it a try and change the date.  If we do a March date - that will nix the swap meet as the weather may not be conducive to having that in the outdoor facilities at the Casino.
~It was also suggested that in addition to the inside parking we move the outside parking for participants "inside" the fenced area so they feel more a part of the show and activities.
~The committee will continue to meet and resolve the final date with the Casino - hopefully our new date will be set by the August meeting.   PLEASE ATTEND THIS MEETING SO YOU CAN KEEP UPDATED ON SHOWDOWN IN THE VALLEY 2018!!!

~ELECTION OF OFFICERS FOR 2017/2018 WAS HELD AT THE END OF THE BUSINESS MEETING.
Nominations were opened for all offices.
Kevin Cardwell was nominated for president - with no other names presented, Doug Horstman moved we close nominations and club voted to retain Kevin Cardwell as president.
